Teaching writing

Teaching how to write effectively is one of the most important life-long skills educators impart to their students. When teaching writing, educators must be sure to select resources and support materials that not only aid them in teaching how to write, but that will also be the most effective in helping their students learn to write. Time4Writing.com is a webside that I sometimes use because it offers educators a number of resources that assist in teaching writing. Teachers will find free writing resources on grading, writing conversations, and the use of grafic   organizes. There are also valuable articles and activities on other related writing topics, like sentence writing, paragraph writing, and essay writing. The articles provide information and guidance, while the activities motivate students to practice their skills with printable worksheets, quizzes, video lessons, and interactive games. Methods of teaching grammar

Teaching grammar is an essential part of school education or adult learning.  Without good grammar, spoken or written words lose much of their meaning and most of their value.  Grammar is a very important thing to get right, and teachers should take extra care to impart proper grammar to all their students.  Sadly, grammar is often seen as a difficult and boring subject and one popular method of teaching is to just repeat the correct grammar for a certain situation over and over until it is memorised and able to be repeated, like a parrot.  This is dull for both teachers and students, and often only results in the students being able to repeat what they have learned, rather than resulting in a complete understanding that can be applied to all situations. General social commentary and the popular press tend to generalise about young people, their access to and use of technology. Recent literature have challenged these assumptions and acknowledge that, although students today may have been born into a technologically rich world, they may not be avid and skilful users of technology. Further, there is recognition that merely providing access to technology is not enough. Meaningful development of technology based knowledge and skills is important for all students, in order to avoid a phenomenon known as the ‘second-level digital divide’, whereby people have drastically differentiated skills, which in turn influence how people participate in society. The need to keep pace with society and prepare students for their roles in society are just two rea

Teaching new vocabulary!

Pre-teaching Vocabulary Words One of the most effective methods of helping children learn new vocabulary words is to teach unfamiliar words used in a text prior to the reading experience. Adults (either alone or with the child(ren)) should preview reading materials to determine which words are unfamiliar. Then these words should be defined and discussed. It is important for the adult to not only tell the child(ren) what the word means, but also to discuss its meaning. This allows the child(ren) to develop an understanding of the word’s connotations as well as its denotation. Also, discussion provides the adult with feedback about how well the child(ren) understands the word. After pre-teaching vocabulary words, the child(ren) should read the text. Repeated Exposure to Words It may seem common sense that the more times we are exposed to a word, the stronger our understanding becomes. However, repeated exposure to new vocabulary words is often ignored. Adults often forget a person
